What are some good breathing excercises I could do on the alto sax or flute? I'm preparing solos and both require to play several chromatic like measures all of which are slured. I run out of breath too quickly. I know its impossible to slur 3 and a half lines, but I can't get past more than 3 measures. Thanks, will rate.
*breathe out all of your air FIRST. THEN take in a deep breath but dont raise your chest or shoulders, because you want to use your diafragm to breathe. then after youve taken the breath hold it for 5 seconds and then let the air out slowly in an s sound. lol. or maybe because you play the sax, you could just blow it out slowly on any note you choose :]
to add to thatt
*let the air out on a certain amount of beats. say you start with 10. then you go on to 15. then 20, and so on. and this way you can practice your control on the amount of air you let out. if you cant make it to a number. try again the next day.
i deffenitely understand what your going through. if i dont practice my breathing for a while, i get out of touch and cant make it through more than TWO measures :]

Sit up straight, and have your feet on the floor-one slightly in front of the other. Try to do this in front of a mirror. Place the sraw in your mouth, and breathe in through the straw. Your back should widen as you breathe in, but your chest should not rise very much at all.
Then exhale on ssssss (like a snake). Repeat and exhale as you pant like a puppy. Halfway between your sternum and belly button is your epigastrium, and it should bounce as you do this.

(at 4 counts, your arms should be parallel to the ground) then breathe out for 8 counts while lowering your arms back down to your side. then breathe in for 10 counts and out for 10 counts (count 5 is where your arms will be parallel to the ground) and so on. then do 12 counts, then 16. and there you go! doing these exercises each day before practice will be effective. remember to take a break if you feel lightheaded! good luck with playing! :D
pshxily answered Friday July 28 2006, 8:50 pm: well.. ive had to do many solos and everything (i play tenor sax and clarinet) and what i found helpful is that if you have time before you perform.. just relax (anyway you can.. i tend to listen to my favorite calm song)and just think of what you have to do.. and then just take about 4 or 5 deep deep breaths before you play.. and then one big one in order to play.. make sure that while your playing.. YOU RELAX!! that way.. your lungs dont just push all the air out on the first measure.. it keeps an even flow.. and by doing that.. your tone should improve too! well good luck with everything and i hope i helped <33 [ pshxily's advice column | Ask pshxily A Question ]
Alexandkendra answered Friday July 28 2006, 7:48 pm: hey,ahh you play the sax.I wannted to play lolz a longtime ago thats so cool. But for cheerleading i get really nervous and feel like i'm going to pass out so my private coach tells me to do a certin breathing excercies so i dont loose my breath..Lie down on a rug or blanket on the floor with your legs straight and slightly apart, your toes pointed comfortably outwards, arms at your sides not touching your body, your palms up, and your eyes closed. This is called a "relaxed body" position. Take time to relax your body and breathe freely.
well i hoped i helped
