straight & soft hair wanted!

Question Posted Sunday July 16 2006, 9:51 pm

I have dirty blonde hair that falls a little past my shoulders. It's naturally wavy & frizzy. I straighten it with an iron, but in a matter of minutes it goes wavy and frizzy! I've tried different conditioners and frizz control products. I really want my hair to be touchable soft too, because it sometimes feels like straw after I straighten it. Any tips or products you suggest will be appreciated.

Most of the anti-frizz styling products out there work very well but not without the aid of good styling tools (meaning high heat) and the right brushes (soft but firm bristles). Yet even after all of that, if there is any humidity in the air, none of this will work to keep hair smooth.

I suspect you haven't found the right combination of products and styling tools yet. It is difficult to suggest exactly which ones would work best for you. As a general rule, and this is only a general rule, be sure to use a silicone serum (Citre Shine and John Frieda make good ones, but there are dozens more), and then a styling lotion or styling spray; for these types of products, L'Oreal's Studio Line and Physique (both at the drugstore) have a great range of options to consider. Also think about purchasing the new straightening shampoo and conditioner you can now buy. I haven't personally tried it, but i'm sure it would be good.

It is also important to be sure you are using the right blow dryer (1875 watts is best) and flat iron (the new ceramic plates are excellent). Also, a good, round, bristled brush works well. It is important to portion the hair in small sections and go slowly over each section several times. You can try light misting hair spray after straightening each section. That way it won't become wavy afterward.

Overall, even the best products may not be able to compensate for what nature has given you, or counteract the environment (i.e. humidity outdoors or at work) you're facing. Working with a hairstylist to learn the best techniques for straightening your hair with heat and the appropriate styling tools would be a very good idea (assuming you have not pursued this option yet). Also keep in mind that every time you straighten your hair, you are doing damage to it. Try to avoid straightening it when it's not needed. Have you considered working with what nature has given you? I think scrunching is very cute with people who have wavy hair. You can buy Aussie Scrunching Spray, I use it and I love it.

I have the same problem. My hair is thick and naturally wavy. I tend to straighten my hair in sections. I make a half pony tail, straighten that first, and then straighten the top layers. I also use something made by VO5 called Miracle! mist. Its in a red bottle with a gray sprayer. And to keep your hair straight, you can mist on a little bit of hairspray as you are straightening the layers.

I really hope I helped!

A straightening iron is going to do that to your hair.. Use leave-in conditioner and don't straighten it as often. Good luck.
