Question Posted Thursday July 13 2006, 8:59 pm

I am on a medication where your body retains water (predizone to be exact) I have been on it for a few years (if you on it short term for like poison ivy i dont think it affects your weight) anyways

I was wondering is there anyway i can loose the weight i have "gained" from this medication. I know alot of people that take it get really fat but I am only about 10 pounds over weight (well in my mind im 5'1" 115 pounds) but i have trouble loosing weight because of this. Besides around my waist my face is alittle on the chubby side from this too. (although most would think thats my natural face shape without even thinking.. its just rounder) but in the winter when i pack on about 5 more pounds than i do in the summer i tend to look as if i almost have a double chin

My questions is how can i loose weight without like stop drinking water and other beverage because I am very active so I have to have usually 1-2 bottles a day besides what i have with meals. Because for school i would really like to get closer to 100 pounds and be nice and skinny but no matter what i do i can lose pounds but not really size.

Any suggestions? (and please don't say I am at a fine weight my doctors and parents say I am "chubby")

hey! it sounds like you are doing everything really well, and it isnt your fault its the medicines! i dont think you sound fat at all! my friend is on prednizone too and she said there is nothing you can do to look how you want because the medicine is like steriods almost. all you can do is eat healthy foods! walk around the block once a night! =D

Hi there,
As a person who has to take prednisone on a semi-regular basis, I know exactly how you feel. I also know about some of the other side effects that you may not know, for example being on prednisone for extended amounts of time can also increase your risk of diabetes in the future. I am not trying to scare you or tell you not to take it just trying to give you some facts.

As for losing weight, for your face there is not alot you can do as the rounded face is a side-effect, the reason you may have gained weight is that prednisone increases your appetite so that it feels like you are starving all the time and that you haven't eaten in months, what worked for me to lose the weight I put on was to drink tons of water, and eat 6 times a day, 3 fairly large meals but low in fat and calories I found fish worked for me, and 3 snacks of stuff like veggies, fruit, yogurt etc... and to try not to eat in between. Also incorporate exercise I found swimming worked best.

I don't know why you are taking prednisone, I take it for Chron's disease when I have a flare up, but if it is for a gastrointestinal disease there are so many new therapies out there that are worth trying, if its for something else have a serious talk with your doctor about searching for an alternative if he refuses to try perhaps consult another doctor for a second opinion.

Good Luck

Sara

Thats odd. Are you sure you are fat? Your BMI is normal. Are you sure you're really 5'1? Hmm. I don't know.

BUT.. a great diet is, the atkins diet.
You only drink 1-2 bottles a day?
You drink 8 on this.. well you don't have too. but it helps more.
All you do is eat protein & vegetables.
No bread, junk food, or fruit.
I take a walk everyday, & drink plenty of water.
You lose like 10 pounds in two days.
But, you have to keep at it, because it slows things down for awhile. Just for like a week. Check into it though..
