for whatever you use, pads or tampons (i perfer tampons because i feel they are more sanitaty, cause no blood gets out of your body and its not as messy, plus you dont feel it. Tampax pearls are a good brand) but whatever you use, change it regualrly.
Tampons can be safely left in for 6-8 hours and you can use the bathroom with them in
as for pads, my friends that use them say they change them whenever they pee, so you dont need to wath that as much

read packages for directions and such

as for cramps:
Advil or Midol
Sit-ups, it sounds crazy, but works
SLEEP!
heating pad if really bad
Bannanas
hot baths
COMFY CLOTHES!
wear sweats or lose clothes if possible

you may be bitcher than usual
and want different foods
or be moody (happy, sad, hyper)

just know its normal, and as i believe its playtex says: Have a happy period : )

There really aren't tips for periods but start of with pads. Change your tampon or pad every 3-4 huors. When you get cramps, take a warm bath, take Midol or Advil or just move around so they go away. You might get your period irregulary. Sometimes you will be late so don't worry about it much. You might feel bloated and cravings for certain foods. It's nothing scary though.
