hot dog help!

Question Posted Tuesday June 27 2006, 4:18 am

I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian since April. now it's June and hot dog season. I never really enjoyed hot dogs or barbecue as a meat-eating person, but I've started to give everything a try once. my problem is that there are so many different types of vegetarian hot dog alternatives. I don't want to try them all because I know some are probably terrible and I don't want to be turned off of them. if you're a vegetarian or have tried a lot of vegetarian products, I'd like advice on which hot dogs are better than others.

Whether you're a vegetarian or not, no hot dog is good for you and I really recommend you steer clear of them as much as you possibly can. Hebrew National makes some good dogs though. The lacto-ovo vegetarian diet always interested me, you're in good company because 5 time Mr. Universe Bill Pearl has been one for over 40 years and he's one of the greats in the fitness world.

Edit- Sure, Hot dogs are the greatest super food in the world for you and are "healthy". I heard that if you eat 3 a day that you'll lose 25 lbs in 3 days.....NOT. But what do I know? Iam only a personal trainer.

Hey,

I have been a vegetarian for a while now, I find that most veggie dogs have a weird taste and texture, but when I do eat veggie dogs or other vegetarian "meat" products, Oh Natural by Schnider is my personal favorite brand. You have to look on the label because some of the products contain milk, not all of them, though. Yves seems to be another popular vegetarian brand, I personally am not fond of it. Friends of mine like the burgers. I would reccomend the Oh Naturel veggie dogs, they have the best texture and taste of all the dogs that I've tasted. Good Luck.

Love, Rainbow

I can tell you that MorningStar Farms corndogs are awesome. If you like corndogs, you should try those. I haven't tried their plain hotdogs, but if their corndogs are good, I think their hotdogs are probably worth a try.

I'd love to hear from you on the other products you have tried. There are so many choices now, as you mentioned, I don't know which to try... Like have you tried the deli sliced "turkey" products? Or the "bacon"? Feel free to email me at DangerWench@gmail.com if you like. :-)

Hey! I've been vegan for about 3 years and I've never been a big fan of the Veggie hot dogs. Most of them don't taste like much more than pepper with a weird consistency. However, from all that I have tried I'd have to say that Smart Dogs are the best. They have a more hotdog like feel to them and they taste a lot more authentic too. They taste better if you grill them longer I've found, as well. If you want some really good BBQ like fake-meat products though try ANY of the veggie sausages. Now those are a real treat.

EDIT: For sausages, I don't tend to really like the breakfast sausages, they seem pretty fake to me, but for barbequeing sausages the tofurky brand is good. They make some regular veggie hot dogs as well, which are also fairly tasty. They have a pretty big selection of different meatless products. You can read about the different variety's of sausages here: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
All of the variations are pretty good but I personally like the Kielbasa style ones myself. Hope that helps!
