There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people.
But to answer your question, they cut themselves to relieve pain. It may not make sense to you, but it does to the people who do it. It doesn't help, it only makes matters worse. It becomes addicting and can wind up killing you. But, they start to experiment, it in a way relieves their pain but after a while it just becomes a sick addiction. It's a real mystery the way the mind works huh?
