Name Meanings

Question Posted Wednesday June 7 2006, 1:16 pm

Well, I'm currently working on a novel, and I need a name. I have a few to choose from, but I don't think that any of them are right. I need a male name that means 'water' or 'ocean' or 'sea'. I've already visited tons of websites, so if you could just give me a list instead of a website, I would be very grateful. I rate fives for good answers!

Could you use an actual name of a body of water?

For instance, "Duncan Idaho" conveys a kind of hearty, mountainous vibe, and sounds good even though it uses a 'normal' name.

Baikal, Caspian, Eire, Seine... just open up a map. How about Ahab, from Moby Dick? For that matter, how about Moby? I'm not sure how fictional or wacky you're aiming for, but I hope this helps.

Otherwise, I've used www.behindthename.com in the past.

Good luck -

Oooo. That's a toughie but here's some names I think are cute that mean either "water", "sea" or "ocean":
- Moses (Drawn Out of Water - Greek)
- Brooks (Running Water - English)
- Kelby (Place by the Flowing Water - Celtic)
- Rod/Rodney (Land Near the Water - English)
- Troy (Water - Celtic)
- Wade/Wayde (Cross the Water - English)
- Washington (Town near the Water - English)
- Winchell (Drawer of Water - English)
- Marvin (Friend of the Sea - English)
- Merlin (By the Sea - English)
- Varun (Lord of the Sea - Hindi)
- Douglas (Flowing from the dark river - Celtic
- Kelvin (Scottish river)
- Dylan (Welsh sea hero)
- Murdoch (Scottish sea protector)
- Murphy (Irish sea warrior)
- Kai (Sea - Hawaiian)
- Poseidon (God of the Sea)
- Triton (king of the sea in the Little Mermaid ;))
- Cain (clear water)
- Kenn (clear water)
- Llyr (of the sea - Welsh)
I hope this can give you some kind of head start! I hope I helped and good luck on your novel! Let me know how it goes! - GC07
