1. true friends accept you as you, and dont attempt to change you
2. true friends are people you are very comfortable with and could even open their fridge and get food out for yourself without feeling embarrassed
3. true friends will stand by you

A true friend will cry when you cry.
A friend will feel like they have to provide you with a shoulder to cry on.

However, you may not talk to them much, and you may not have too many ties with them. A true friend is one who you talk a lot to, can divulge your deep secrets, invite over and have fun with, and who would do things for you which are different than what you would normally do with a non-true friend person.
