knee pain

Question Posted Monday June 5 2006, 2:40 am

My Mother is 50 yrs old and is suffering from knee pain for the last 4-5 years.Doctors had said that the gap between bones at knee has reduced and there is no cure except knee replacement surgury.
Recently we consulted a rheumatologist who has adviced treatment by injecting fluid in knees to increase the gap ,over a period of three weeks costing around Rs 15000.Is such a procedure advisable ?What are the success rates?

I am not a doctor. I have worked for one.

I can only tell you that if Synvisc is the injection they are talking about...have mom check and see if it is covered by her insurance.

It has been a couple of years since I have dealt with it, but at that time the majority of insurance companies WOULD NOT pay for it.

Only a couple of patients tried it and at that time neither thought it helped a whole lot.

Keep in mind this was a couple of years ago and that may not be what they will use. Also consider
that not all people are alike and it might very well work fine for her.

The main concern is the cost. As you said it is VERY expensive and not covered by all insurance companies. Those that paid at the time had very strict guidelines that had to be followed before they would pay. Have her get all that explained to her before she starts, call the insurance company.

If you do know the name of the fluid they are wanting to inject, you might check with our resident chemist MFS. He may be able to give you
more information on it. :)
