Question Posted Friday May 26 2006, 1:15 pm

Im 13/f
I eat alot of chocolate and my mum thinks im addicted to to it, i do too, i always feel like chocolate and a bar is never enough.
I eat a chocolate bar every day and a sweet cereal bar too. some days i'll even have two choccie bars.
I'm worried that if i carry on i might get diabetes, i want to stop eating so much, but how?
How can i make myself motivated and resist chocolate?

I know how you feel on this one. I eat a lot of chocolate as well, and sometimes I struggle with not eating it. It can be hard but most of the time I manage. That person that said chocolate is good for you, is right. It does have antioxidants that can help you decrease your risk of heart disease, and it helps release the hormone dopamine, which helps you stay happy. It's healthy for you but only in moderate amounts. Try eating chocolate low in sugar first of all. Like usually chocolate can get up to 20 mg of sugar in just one serving! Try cutting down serving sizes, and if you really have to get that urge, make sure it's low in sugar. (under 10 mg). Also see a Doctor about how to deal with this problem.

It's always good to have some chocolate every now and then. It protects the cells in your body and keeps you happy. Just try to decrease a little step-by-step. If you're underweight or at a healthy weight, you exercise regularly, and you watch what you eat (other than chocolate) by eating your servings of fruit, vegetables, and grains, you're less likely of developing diabetes. But if it runs in the family, or you are overweight, check with a Doctor just to be safe.

Most people snack like that out of boredom, so try to get out of the house and stay busy and run around if you get the urge to snack. Keep the stuff away from your room and computer, too, because that's where I tend to go through, like, whole bags of chips, it's pretty bad. If you really need to snack, try switching to foods that are sweet, but not as bad for you, like dried fruit. Also, dark chocolate is better for you than milk chocolate, so you could go for that at breakdown moments.

Chocolate by itself is actually good for you. It raises your saratonin levels and lifts your spirits. Also chocolate is an antioxidant and is 10,000 Xs better than eating blueberries, which is rated as one of the highest antioxidants. It's the sugar and other additives that are added to your chocolate bar that is bad for you. What you may want to do is buy something called AGAVE (pronounced Augavay). This is a natural sweetener that comes from a cactus. It tastes like caramel or butterscotch (slightly). This sweetener does not have the same affect on the body as sugar does and diabetics can have it. I make my own chocolate milk w/it and chocolate bars. You want to use raw ground cacao (which is chocolate). It's the cooking process that makes it bad for you. If your local health food stores do not carry it I have included a website below that you can purchase it from. They also make chocolate bars too. To get more information to this healthy alternative simply put "raw cacao" in your search engine and you will be bombarded with tons of choices and price ranges. Good luck!

Namaste!

You are probably psychologically addicted to it. I don't know if you are physically addicted to it. If you find yourself drinking a lot of soda (Sprite and Root Beer don't count), you probably are. Can't diagnose it, but I can tell you how to treat it.
What your need to do is first hide any sort of chocolate from yourself, in a hard to get place. Like, try a drawer or a cabinet. Then, you need to restrain yourself for a day. You probably do it at the same time every day, so that's when you occupy yourself with something else (I.E. read or write). Get through the first day, and then if you start feeling sick, that's the surefire symptom that you are addicted to it. You then need to get out of the house for the entire day (So do this on a weekend...). The 2nd day is worse than the 1st, and the 3rd is definately the worst of all. If you relapse, then start over. You'll get 3 days soon enough. Then you go for more.
You need to stop completely, though. There is no such thing as "Less", unfortunately.

If you need motivation, you can make it by picturing yourself in 20 years, 30 years, etc. Just think of what it would be like to have some years off of your life due to clogged arteries (Not to scare you, but that IS a motivation). Or, just reward yourself with something else. Like clothing for a few days without chocolate. :)
