If you read back through this column, one thing I say repeatedly is that "People don't like you because of who you are...they like you because of how THEY feel when they are around you."
You just described an excellent example of this.
This poor guy probably feels isolated and lonely and when you took time to show him some kindness, you made him really happy, so it is normal for him to be drawn towards you because of the happiness he felt when he was around you.
I'm really proud of you and I think you did the right thing by being kind to that boy. Imagine if you were one of the poor kids that got labeled "weird" and someone showed you a random act of kindness...you'd probably be drawn to that person too AND you would feel so happy and grateful.
I think you were following what you felt was right in your heart but now it seems you may be letting your friends influence you and turn your heart cold. Don't let them cloud your judgement. I think you did a very good thing and you should feel good about yourself. I think you should set an example to your friends and perhaps you will inspire them to follow your lead and make this world a nicer place.
And for the record, I think it's sweet that this boy noticed little details about things you like. I bet the jocks and jerks in your school are too self-absorbed to notice those things. This boy is going to make an amazing boyfriend and husband some day. And YOU can make such a huge difference in his life. I commend you and hope you continue to show kindness to others. The world would be so much better if others were more like you.
Much Love,
Mrs S ]
