Which Job?

Question Posted Sunday April 30 2006, 1:15 pm

(17, Female) I already work at a candy store & am supposed to be working there over the summer, too. They are very nice to me & I enjoy working there. However, I am also very into theatre & I found out about an audition for a theatre for grades 9-12 that does performances on issues important to teenagers & then has discussions with the audience after. If you make it once you audition, it is a paid job (I do not know how much though). I really wanted to audition, but I found out that the training will be for one month over the summer mon-thur 1-6 pm. I did not realize it was that big a commitment& it becomes a problem because that would probably interfere with the job I already have. The candy store is open form like 10am-5pm, & they said we could be working longer days over the summer (which was good for me, b/c I need to work). Howevere I really want to do this theatre thing, but I can not & do not want to quit the job I already have. The theatre program sounds like a really good experience but it's just so time consuming. I don't know what to do & I just don't want to quit the job I have (I already told them I'd be working over the summer). What would you do in this situation?

The first step would be try out for the theatre program and see if you make it. There is no sense stressing over a situation that may not happen. Another thing you need to do is talk to your boss at the candy storre about this dilemma, I'm sure they will help you work out a schedule so you can do both the theatre program and keep your job at the cany store. I hope this helps.. good luck!

hey! i think the best thing to do is call the theatre right away and ask them a few things. will the training be paid, or not? if so, how much? how many hours a week will you be working if you make it, and how much will you be gettin payed an hour? once you find those things out, compare them to the job at the candy shop. if the pay is relatively the same, and you will be getting the same amount of hours, then i say go for the theatre job because it sounds like a cool opportunity, and it is something you would want to do. but you should decide fast, so that if you quit the candy store, they can find someone to take your spot before summer is here.

on the other hand, you already have experience working at the store, and if it is a job that you like, then maybe you should just stick with it. it is hard for people to find a job they enjoy. you also have to keep in mind that if you quit, and then don't make it past the auditions, then you will be left without a job. just weigh out the pros and cons and that should help you decide! :)

wellyou need to realise that you have to choose which one means more to you because you cant have it both ways. You can keep your current job and pass on the audition, you will be earning money but will have lost the opourtunity do thatre, or you could go to the audition and quit your job. I must admit, it is a risk as you may not get the audition. If i was in your situation, i would explain to your current employer that there is an audition for a theatre production and it is really important to you as you love theatre. Hopefully they will understand and leave your job open for you. BUt if not, i would quit your job and go for the audition. There will always be ordinary jobs available somewhere but having a chance to be in theatre is not and you say you love it so follow your dreams! You dont want to regret not going to the audition and if you dont cut it (and i think you will :D ) then you could always go back to the shop and ask if there are any jobs available again. If not then im sure there will be pleanty of summer jobs in most shops.

Hope i have helped,
kerry x

p.s. if you choose the audition good luk! :)

hey, first find out the facts about the theatre job. find out what it pays and other stuff about it. after that compare and contrast both jobs. think about whcih one would suit you best. think about finanical things adn which job would work better with your life. if it happens to be the theatre, politely explain to the candy store that you thought about it alot but the candy store job just isnt working for you and your life. hope it all works out. cait♥
