Phobia

Question Posted Saturday April 29 2006, 1:39 pm

40's(f)I have a phobia of vomiting, me or other people. I have tried counselling, hypnotherapy, NLP and confrontational therapy. Nothing has worked. I have run out of ideas on how to beat this. Does anyone have any other suggestions on things to try and has anyone had this problem and got rid of it? If so, how? Thanks.

I had a friend that was this way...maybe she still is I am not sure. Even as a nurse, there are times it bothers me, but it must not be a phobia because I deal with it. It's a combination of the sound, smell and seeing it. It often makes me gag. It stimulates sort of a reflex where my mouth starts watering and my nose runs.

Try some tricks that nurses use:
If you have to clean it up..like in the case it's your own or kids etc. Put a little peppermint extract right under your nostrils (I have heard of using vicks too) Suck on an ice cube..wear a mask, goggles and gloves, and turn your head..look as little as possible.

If you witness it happening leave the room, if not possible, turn around, plug your ears and hold your breath as long as possible!

The best defense is a proper offense!

I used to have that phobia when I was younger. I went to Catholic School, and for some reason, there were always kids in my class throwing up. But then again, it was around 1st grade, so you know, little kids throw up alot.

Whenever someone would throw up, I would run out of the classroom because I would get this sickening feeling. I think that you might be thinking to hard about this phobia of yours.

You just have to accept it. Obviously, noone likes to do it or see it happening but it's a healthy part of life. I'm not saying it's healthy to do, I'm saying that it's natural and it happens. This may sound gross, but it's just food that is chewed up and in your stomach. Everyone has chewed up food in their stomach, and it looks like that, but we can't see inside our stomachs now can we?

Is there something in your past that made you scare of vomitting? Did you used to do it alot as a kid? These may be things causing you to be scared of it.

Have you seen a dead animal in the road? Or a movie where someone gets shot or stabbed? These are gross things too, so ask yourself how you deal with seeing those things. Chances are, you may feel totally sickened by seeing someone throw up, but think how that person is feeling.

You know, we are going to see some gross and bad things in life. We just need to accept it. Afterall, the good outweighs the bad.
