Mom Wont Let Me Work..

Question Posted Thursday April 20 2006, 8:44 pm

Okay so im 15 years old and i would like to get a job and earn some money. We dont have many job opportunities around here for 15 year olds and McDonalds is pretty much the only place that'll hire 15 year olds. Now the reason i need money is because my parents are broke..i hate spending their money cuz they always complain..so i figured if i got a job i could fix this..the only problem is my mom doesnt want me working at Mcdonalds..and i really dont see any harm in it..alot of my friends work there so its not like i'll be the only one there..i think she is worried most about me gaining more weight from working at a place like that...But is there any way to convince my mom that working at fast food places wont kill me..its not like i plan on working there my whole life you know? Thanks In Advance!

are you sure that's why your mom doesn't want you working there? maybe she just heard that it's a terrible place to work at! a lot of people have said that they hated working there, so maybe she doesn't want to put you through that! how about trying to find a babysitting or dog sitting job of some sort? or maybe if you have a talent of some sort, try using that to make money... like baking or drawing or something? mowing lawns in the summer for other people is a pretty good job too... but i am not sure you would want to do that!

also, if your parents don't want you to get a job, maybe they don't think you are spending that much money and they can still afford to help you out! but that is really nice that you are trying to help out! just bring up the idea a few more times if you still want to work at mcdonalds... just say you want to try it out and see if you like it. say you want to see what it's like to have a job and make your own money. and you won't gain weight working there... you are only allowed like one small meal or something like that! good luck!

I'll be happy to help you on this one. Unfortunately you won't be able to get a job until you turn 16. This has to do with child labor laws. I work for a McDonald's myself and we don't hire anyone under the age of 16. Most people we hire though are 17 or older. So I'm sorry about this, but it's very unlikely that you could have a job at 15 years old. Any questions, come to my Advice Center.
