I just want to know why lots of people like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Guns 'n' Roses, etc. I like the Beatles and Nirvana because their music is very good but I am bad at knowing what a song means. There is a lot of drug references, I think, but I am sad because I am bad at song meanings. That's why there's songmeanings.net/com but I can't always rely on that.

It hurts my ears too much.
not_your_star34 answered Sunday April 16 2006, 3:35 pm: A lot of people like that kind of music (me included) because of its originality. It's different from 99.9% of the stuff that's on the radio today. Plus, it just sounds good. Plain and simple. :oD
As for song meanings, it depends on the song, when it was written, who wrote it...
Because I'm most familiar with the Beatles, I'll use them as an example. John, Paul, George, and even Ringo all wrote songs while they were together. Because John and Paul wrote the majority of the songs that the Beatles performed, let's use them as examples.
John usually wrote the more complicated, hard to understand songs. Paul was usually writing the slower, ballad-type songs, such as "Yesterday."
Of course, John did write many love songs and Paul did write some songs that weren't slow and ballad-like, but I'm just talking about what they wrote the most.
About the drug references... there are some. For instance, the song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was rumored to be about LSD because of its initials (This was denied, though). In "Get Back," one of the lines is:
"Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner,
But he knew it wouldn't last.
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass."
(FYI, Paul wrote "Get Back" and John wrote "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.)
It all depends on the song. Not all Beatles or Nirvana (I'm a Nirvana fan, too) songs have drug references.

omgitsjaimee answered Saturday April 15 2006, 10:37 pm: everyone has different tastes in music. I love led zeppelin and pink floyd, along with others. some bands just have a more appealing osund to a lot of people than other bands do. its all a matter of personal taste.
sometimes the meanings of songs are quite obvious, other times they are just meant for you to figure out yourself.
meaghanek answered Saturday April 15 2006, 9:17 pm: I also have trouble figuring out what songs mean. I feel that a lot of times it's like poetry, where there is no right or wrong interpretation and that sometimes people try too hard to get the meaning. There are times when I have one idea or a song makes me feel a certain way and when I look it up I was way off, but I figure who cares, and keep on thinking what I want. Also, there are lots of songs that I like for the music itself and not necessarily the song lyrics. To get a better understanding you coul try to read the lyrics without the music, that might help you focus more. [ meaghanek's advice column | Ask meaghanek A Question ]
