It's hard to explain,and in a way it's pretty much up to your own interpretation.You have to watch it a few times to get what's going on.I pretty much think that it's about how what we do effects other people in ways that we'll never even notice,or that everyone dies and ends up alone regardless of what they do.By what happens at the very end,it seems like it's telling you that we shouldn't worry about dying.
But yes,on the surface,it's about this kid who imagines seing a big talking rabbit named Frank,and Frank makes him do bad stuff.

Haha it's one of the strangest movies you'll ever see. Then again, I havn't seen many cult movies that I didn't think were a bit off.
A boy [Donnie Darko] has visions of a giant bunny named Frank who tells Donnie the world's ending. He has a phsycological disorder [you'll notice that his behavior is linked to when he takes his medication] and sees people with spears protruding from their chests. He feels a need to listen to Frank and does all sorts of stupid things that Frank tells him to do.
