French kissing is a kiss that involves tongues, making out encompasses french kissing, regular kissing, petting, nibbling, blowing in the ear, rubbing cheeck/necks together etc., etc., etc., in a mixed fashion. For instance, before kissing (that is, when it was onlybetween mother and child) lovers would rub cheeks and necks together. This was still making out. When people aregetting married and dude says "you may kiss the bride" they may french kiss, but they do not make out.
