For English, I have to relate the themes in the novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen to the my last book report/presentation, which is "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux. The problem is that the two books couldn't be more different in theme.
"Phantom" is a Gothic novel with themes like dangerous jealousy and hopeless love (Erik's hopeless love for Christine). It follows the life of a despairing madman.
Jane Austen's novel is a light comedy that focuses on, well, pride and prejudice. No diversity issues like in "Phantom" (except that Darcy is a mega-rich landlord and Elizabeth is a middle class girl in the countryside, but that's not comparable with the Phantom) and nothing extrordinarily dramatic that "plumbs the depths of a man's soul" or anything.
But this is my only option. Can anyone at least try to think of some comparisons in theme?

The two men had irrationally strong emotional feelings while the women kept level heads and were true to themselves and their feelings. Erik's irrational emotions stemmed from how the prejudice of others treated him. It was his pride, which lead him to jealousy. He felt that he had created Christine and therefore she belonged to him, which is also possessiveness. All are fear-based emotions. Darcy, for the most part, let his prejudice control his actions as well as the actions of others around him. He almost destroyed his true love and the true love of others simply because of his pridefulness. He was also prejudice if you remember, because he felt that Elizabeth was not in his social league. All the while both the women stayed true to their hearts. They know what they wanted in their lives and stuck to it.
I hope these thoughts help to stir those creative juices. You have a lot to work with here. Good luck!
SweetxxIntoxication answered Friday March 24 2006, 2:07 pm: Well "prejudice" can be a theme can't it? How horribly the phantom was treated. "Love", can that fit in at all?
To be quite honest, I have only seen the movie and play of The Phantom of the Opera and only saw parts of the movie Pride and Prejudice. But I can image it is tough, you can't relate any other books instead? Or do something like www.pinkmonkey.com and compare?
Anyways, hope I helped in one way or another. =) [ SweetxxIntoxication's advice column | Ask SweetxxIntoxication A Question ]
