Starting school a year earlier

Question Posted Sunday March 19 2006, 9:51 am

Hell advicenators,

I was just wondering: what are your thoughts on starting school/letting your children start school a year earlier? Do you have any own experiences with this? Is there any cons; and what are the pros? Anything you shoúld think about before making the decision? How do you think your life would be different if you did/ didn't start a year earlier? Any opinions you have on this would be appreaciated.
Love,Alyssia.

well i am one of the youngest people in my grade and i would say dont do it. make your child be one of the oldest in the grade. my reasons are thesee... 1) usually the older kids have the advantage in sports and athletics 2) when in highschool, your kid could be the last to drive in his or her grade (aka me) and you have to cart them around everywhere.
those are my reasons..i cant think of any pros or any other cons. i would hold them back...

I'm not sure if its always a good idea, besides the fact most schools don't let it. now im figuring your talking about kindergarden. i teach preschool and we have a number of 2 year olds in 3 year old preschool and thats not a problem but starting kindergarden early is not always a good idea because most children arent socially ready for kindergarden till they reach the age of 5 and only a teacher could tell you if they are because parents don't neceesarily know what to look for. like there is a kid in my class who is more of a loner and keeps to himself and may not be ready for kindergarden but after he leaves school his mom may never know how he was because hes more socialable.

some of the pros are that they are going to be older and ahead of their peers and for whatever reason if they ever need held back they wont be alot older than everyone else.

i think the cons are you are not nes. mature enough to be where you are and you can't make your brain mature faster when you are younger things come when they come and sometimes the longer you wait the better. like with reading they have done studies that most kids arent ready to read till they 11 and they were forced at the age or 7 and that is why they hate it now.

if i started a year earlier i think i would have lower grades and be not as prepared for highschool as i am now

There are a ton of kids in my grade that are younger than me because they started school earlier. I don't really see the big deal about it, but sometimes it sucks being the young one for them. But.. if the teachers think they're too immature to move on at the rate that they're going, they'll hold them back in their early elementary school years.

Hope this helped.
