I'm a trumpet player, and I went on vacation for spring break this week. Now I'm back, and I can hardly play a thing. My chops are way out of shape, and its never been this bad before. Just wondering if there were any suggestions that could help me get back in shape quickly. Like by Monday...??? Please let me know if you can help me.

I'm a brass player too, and what I do when I get out of shape is, I just practice scales and lip slurs for a little while and when I start to get tired I just put it away and practice again the next day. Don't practice for hours on end if your lips are tired. It'll just get worse. Also, don't try to play anything too difficult. For now, do simple stuff until you get back into shape. uisforukelele answered Sunday March 26 2006, 5:49 pm: the best thing you can do is just keep practicing. i have several friends that are trumpet players, and i'm a saxophone player. whenever i have trouble getting back into the swing of things, i just have to keep playing scales and stuff. i suggest that you just keep playing a chromatic scale from top to bottom, back and forth, until your lips start to feel normal again. also try playing scales with different tongue/slur patterns: like tongue-slur-tongue-tongue (tee-ah ta ta) or tongue-tongue-tongue-slur (ta ta tee-ah). if you've ever done solo/ensemble or all-region or anything, then try getting out that music and just going over it. it helps.
