Question Posted Thursday February 23 2006, 11:59 pm

Ohk i have a job. And the problem is i should be getting 20 hours a school week. And 40 hours on a break. Well on a regular week i only get 8 and half hours and on breaks i only get 15 hours.

Its been like this since December. Its really aggravating me because a girl the same age as me is getting more hours then me like 5 hours more.

Im thinking about searching for a new job. Because i need the hours and the money. Would it be a good idea to go out and look for a new job?

Dont tell me that i should start getting more hours soon i highly doubt it.

I work really hard at the job i have now. The girl my age hates working and complains more then anything in the world. I dont get it.

I would really like to know what you guys think i should do.

Ask your boss for more hours. If for some reason they cant give it to you, look for a new job but make sure it is one you will enjoy and can give you more hours than you are doing now and more money. Best of luck xxxx

I think you should talk to you manager or boss or whatever, tell he/she that you really would like more hours, and that they wouldnt be a problem for you. You can also tell he/she about the negative feedback you've been hearing from the other employee's and dont think that they should have those hours. When I had a job like 2 monthes ago alot of the kids around me were complaining for having alot of hours and I talked to them about it and asked if they wanted to have the hours I worked and I'd take theirs and we talked to the manager and it was an even trade. Usually the boss's are understanding and managable about these things. But you have to understand that in a work place since there are usually alot of people working there, and the work is on a budget, they can only afford to give certain hours to certain people. People who have been there longer, are usually the ones who get more hours & the run of the place. You can go elsewhere if you need hours desperately, and I know you dont want to hear this but usually it works out. I had to wait a month before I got the hours that I wanted, and thats just how it works until they work you into the schedule. Cant have everything you want up front, haha. =P

Have you spoken to your boss?

If you were hired with an understanding that those are the hours you would be receiving and you are not getting them your first course of action shouldn't be leaving, it should be discussing it.

Listen what your boss says. It is possible they never understood those were your expectations. If they can't be met then you need to tell them politely that you will need to leave as you need to be working more hours.

But honestly, jobs that will work you the hours you are looking for are RARE. I never found one that allowed me to basically make my own schedule and work exactly when I wanted too around school. It's just not worth the trouble it would be to most business to accommodate students like that.

Good Luck.

Hey there ! It's interesting you've asked this question. I had been going through something similar at my job. I had normally been getting 25 hours a week, but after Xmas my hours were cut down to 15. I was thinking of looking for a new job too.
So my advice to you is to hang in there. It turned out that one of the girls in my department moved, another got a promotion for a new deparment, and another who had seniority over me left for a different job. So guess what happened? Now I'm getting 30 hours a week!! I'm also like the third in my department for seniority, and before I was the fifth! Just think if I had quit, maybe found a job that was horrible but I took it on because I got more hours. I really love my job, I get to work with the underwear and shoes in a large superstore. Also, your boss knows that you're a hard worker, but because you're still in school I'm guessing that you have restricted hours, so obviously you won't be getting as many hours as someone who's available any time. I am available anytime, but a girl that works just as hard as me only gets about 15-20 hours max because she's still a student. I think that once you're out of school, and your hours become less restricted you will definately get more shifts.
So in the meantime, try to stay positive. If you start to feel negatively about your job your co-workers will pick up on it. Just keep doing a good job, work hard, and keep a smile on your face.
