careers having to do with mental illness's

Question Posted Wednesday February 15 2006, 7:27 pm

Well I'm a high school student trying to answer that big question, "What do I want to do with the rest of my life." This past year I've really become interested in mental illness's and how your brain works. I'd like to go into a career with something to do with helping people with mental illness's such as skitzophrenia(spelling?) anyways, anyone out there who has some career advice for me I'd love to hear from you. And if you could also include how you go to where you were (college/university, etc) that would be awesome.

wow i think you should work in a group home as a caretaker or in a day program as an instructer. its great training this is what i do. it doesnt pay much but looks great on a resume. in that setting you will see so much mental retardation and mental illness that you may change your mind . in this job you deal with the therapist and there families and you actually really get to know them and thier behaviors. look into it and if not take a behavioral science class or go to your local social services office or apply at a school district as special ed severly handicap aide . you get hands on experience

If you're interested in mental illnesses, there are a number of career paths open to you.

Mental Health (or Clinical) social worker - this is probably the easiest way to go. It simply requires a B.A. in social work, although it's not uncommon to move on and get a Master's degree as well.

Psychologist: This includes clinical and counseling psychologists. It requires a doctoral degree, i.e. a Ph.D. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication; in some cases, they (and social workers) work with a prescribing psychiatrist as needed.

Psychiatrist: This requires a full medical degree (which takes four years), and another four years as a psychiatric resident, so it's the most demanding. However, psychiatrists are pretty much the top of the mental health field. They can prescribe medication, and provide therapy.
