Jay Leno is filmed during the day. Around the afternoon. SNL isn't pre-recorded like Jay Leno is. They review scripts and go over the content for the show during the week and air live on Saturday nights at 11:30 eastern time.

Leno is filmed the day of at about 5 pm pacific time. It gets really annoying becuase it causes lots of traffic and blocks the street. He films less than 5 minutes away from where I am typing this now.

most of them are live or if they aren't they say "filmed previously"

well it depends where you live and whre they film it but they are filmed live. So it depends if you are in the same time zone as them

I believe they are actually filmed live in places like New York, but by the time they get the western states they are three hours behind.
