You tell them that you are an alto and describe your range. To be more specific, say your range is from G3-F5. Good luck with your audition!

I noticed that one of the users here wrote that a mezzo-soprano and an alto is the same thing. This is completely wrong and if you write that on your info sheet for the audition, the director will think you don't know much about music. A typical alto has a range from F3-F5 (or the F below Middle C to the F two octaves higher). A typical mezzo-soprano has a range from F3-B5. Almost all altos sing in a chest voice, and most mezzo-sopranos sing in a falsetto. An alto in Broadway is more like Velma Kelly from Chicago, Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz, and Sally Bowles from Cabaret (by the way, there is a movie for all three musicals, so if you don't know what I mean you can watch it). A mezzo-soprano in Broadway is more like Idina Menzel from Wicked and Rent and, to get more classical, Cosette from Les Miserables. ]
Tell them what your range is (like you told us) and that you can sing some of the lower soprano notes and most / all of the alto notes.
Good luck!
