How should I help my drunk friend? A friend has had a lot to drink, and they are on the verge of collapsing or throwing up, etc. I'm good at the emotional consolation stuff when people get upset, but what about what I should do physically?
Should they lie down, sit upon the floor, sit in a chair? Should they drink water? Should I get them to eat something? Should I take their wrists and make them wave their arms to keep blood rushing? Should I get them to walk? Should they be outside in the fresh air, or in the warmth? Where should I be, sitting side by side with them, sitting on the floor with my chest to their back?
Secondly, if I'm also drunk and I think that the atmosphere around me is getting aggressive, how can I accelerate sobering up to retain the role of a coordinator and get people sorted out?

If they are wayyy wayy drunk, its good to stay near them so if they fall or something, you're there to grab them so they don't hurt themselves. What you should do when they're drunk is make them sit somewhere and have them sip on some water. Have a trash can near by incase they throw up. I wouldn't get them something to eat until they can drink some water and walk a little straight. Just to know they can keep it down then you should get them something to eat. Take them outside where theres some air. ]
have them eat pretzels, it soaks up the alcahol. I think it doesn anyway. thats why they have pretzels in bars.
same goes for coffee. (?)
have some coffee to calm down....i think. ]
They should lie down on their side, so incase they throw up in their sleep, they don't choke on it. Tell them to drink water and have them eat bread (it absorbs alcohol quicker). Don't get them to walk alot but have them go outside for a quick breath of fresh air then have them lie down. You should stay with them until they fall asleep. If you want to be the coordinator, you shouldn't drink at all. You can eat bread, like I said and that should make you sober up faster. ]
If they drive take their keys. First thing.
Anything they do or you do at this point will not sober them up any. Contrary to myth, coffee and showers do not sober up drunk people. Neither does cold air.
Sorry if this next part is kind of gross.
About the best you can do is do not let them lie on their stomach. Should they get sick they can aspirate the vomit, and it could kill them if nobody else is sober enough to get their face out of it. They could do the same lying on their back too. Sitting up is probably good if you can get them to do it. They don't have to be sitting up straight, just enough that they won't swallow it if they do vomit.
There is no way to accelerate the sobering up. If you are going to babysit a bunch of drunks it is best to stay sober yourself...not a fun job, I know. :) ]
