Constantly Afraid.

Question Posted Tuesday January 3 2006, 9:57 pm

I always worry when I'm home alone. Like I always think the worst. I don't know if there's something wrong with me or what but I am always thinking of what would happen if robbers broke in. I just know I would pass out. Because I know if I hear something in the house I will get real nervous and start to feel like I am gonna faint. Could their be something wrong with me? Or is it just all in my mind?

So you're basically exactly like me. I used to get scared all the time, thinking that someone woudl break in, rob my house, kidnap me...always thinking the worse. But it's all in the mind. And there's nothing at all wrong with you, you just have a good sense of safety and common sense that bad things can happen in the world.
But, remember - bad things don't a.l.w.a.y.s happen.
The house makes noises, as ridiculous and vague as that sounds. Whether it's the floor boards creaking or the wind, it's only sounds.
To feel more at ease you might want to go into a room that is away from a central room of the house, like one with big windows or the room that's right where the front or back door is. To help yourself calm down you might want to turn on the tv just to get your mind off of the noises your house makes. Make some phone calls to your friends, to something that distracts you from being in the quiet where your thoughts can just run wild.
Also, talk to your parents, tell them that you hate being home alone, and maybe you guys can work out a way so that it doesn't happen often, or they can talk to you about why you get scared and can maybe help you overcome your fears.

Don't feel too paranoid. I think that you just watch too many movies, that's all. Whenever I'm home alone and I feel scared, I like to think of it this way-

There's a better chance that a really hot guy will jump out of my closet and do a dance for me than there's a chance that a scary robber will break into my house and kill me.

Even though that thought might not be very realistic, I like to think about it anyways; it makes all my worries go away. Hahaha!

Oh. My. God. I got that today! I was home alone and all the sudden I start to hear all these noises and I get so scared (of everything, Im sure Im more afraid than you) and its totally stupid but the noises were just my dog. It was all in my mind, but I thought it was a ghost or something. Its totally fine to feel scared. What I do is:
.Put on the TV (good things, not scary movies or shows)
.Make sure the doors are all locked & everything.
.I always have my cell phone on, charged, and with me for emergencies.
.I usually talk on the phone when Im scared.
.Turn on music.
.MOST OF ALL, try to get your mind off it. Theres very little chance something can happen to you. Plus, people survive trauma.

edit:: glad they worked i wasnt sure how old you wre so i didnt want to say something that might have affended someone older or something.

not worry i have the same feeling. it really just means your not a secure person.. not that there is anything wrong with that but some people are more secure than others. i find it easier if i just avoid rooms with alot of windows and i keep all the lights on. if robbers know you are home then chances are they wont come to your house so make sure they can tell you are home. double check all your doors in windows if it makes you feel better and maybe try to talk to a friend on the phone or online while no one is home. maybe someone could stay with you for a while until you got over your fear or if you trust your neigbors enough tell them that you are afraid and ask them to help you watch over your house and keep a look out
