hopelessly_devoted answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 4:31 pm: well im pretty sure a normal earring is size 18 and they go by 2's, so going from 18(normal) then to 16 might be a little painful because your just starting, but if you wait a good amount of time before going to 14, it shouldnt hurt that bad.
good luck!
also some tips:
*make sure you are doing this because you really want to and not because all your friends have it.
*if you go to a 14 or bigger you have to leave an earring in at all times, otherwise your hole will close completely.
*putting an 18 in after youve had a 14 or bigger for a while, your hole will close around it and be normal size again.
DancinCutie08 answered Tuesday December 27 2005, 3:54 pm: it all depends on how fast you do it and how much pain you can withstand. the fast you change your earings to a bigger size the more its going to hurt. you know how it feels when you first get your ears pierced for the first few days? well think of that times 10. if that doesnt bother you and you avoid infect (make sure you clean your ears/earings) you should be fine [ DancinCutie08's advice column | Ask DancinCutie08 A Question ]

I'd go with the most gradual gauge you can do, because from what I've heard from friends it hurts like hell. [ Christeena's advice column | Ask Christeena A Question ]
