I always viewed it as an anime laugh. Squinted eyes, because the person is laughing so hard.

like someone squinting their eyes..or someone thats mad...it also kinda looks like a sour face..like someones unhappy about something

I think it means pissed off. Lol I dunno either, but that's what i usually think of when people type that in. Ha, sorry i didn't really help much =P.
