Hey just one question, now i know earth quakes and volcanos and stuff like that are caused by the earths 'crust' moving and all, but why does it move?? and why is it divided into different parts, likke its hard to explain what im trying to say, but its just cause this isnt a school assignment so i dont know what all the proper names for these things are..but im trying to explain, by the erths crust i mean : you know hoe they say when to parts of the earths crust go apart, or krash into eachother suddenly there's a earth quake? yeah well ok i cant explain it..but i hope someone out there understands..i really need help explaining this to my little brother. He just heard our aunt died and is asking me a bunch of questions about this stuff..but yoah so 1) why does the different parts of the 'earths crust' move? and why isnt th earths crust all in one piece?
Thank you for any answer.
Ok well, you should know that each of the different sections of the earth's crust are called tectonic plates. Where two tectonic plates come together are called faults. plates are always moving, but just a little, barely enough to measure. When they move alot it creates earthquakes. The different tectonic plates move because below them, below the earth's crust is molton lava. It's really hot near the center of the earth, and lava is basically melted rocks. the lava is kind of like a river of really hot goopy stuff, and it "flows" like a river would causing the tectonic plates above it to move.
I believe that the different pieces have to do with the beginning of the earth. All the continents of the earth used to be one big land mass, but there was something (an earthquake or meteor or something) that happened and broke it all up into different pieces. Sorry, i dont know much about this one.
If you need more info, try googling "earth science" "tectonic plates" or "Pangea" (that's the name of all the continents when they were together)
