Question Posted Saturday November 19 2005, 4:02 pm

I'm 13 and about to audition for a musical. We're supposed to prepare a song and a monologue. I've gone through an array of broadway songs. Finally, I listened to "Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again" from the Phantom of the Opera. It's beautiful! But before I get the sheet music, I need to know; is it a difficult piece? Vocally demanding? I'm in a very advanced chorus, which means that I can sing a lot, but there's no real way of telling whether this song is too overreaching or not just by listening, you know? If anyone has had any experience with this piece, could I have a few tips?

And PLEASE do not say "go see a vocal teacher/go take a voice lesson/idk lol hope i helped." Even though I'm in an advanced chorus, I can't afford a voice lesson. I know that puts me at a disadvantage, but that's JUST LIFE.

think of me from the phantom of the opera if you're female, point of no return in you're male. nothing from phantom of the opera is difficult.

Hope i could help!

ScratchesOnTheWall answered Monday November 21 2005, 11:54 am:
generally speaking I wouldn't go for a Phantom song at 13. Unless you have an exceptional sop voice(and i mean exceptional) it will take you a long time to train your voice to this style especially without help and yes it will be very demanding.

Also if you're auditioning for a musical go with a more traditional musical number. Phantom is an oddity in that, as its name suggests, it is a strange half-bredd of modern day musical and popular opera.

Some great musicals for songs are West Side Story(for pretty girly songs to suit your range), Chicago (for big, sexy, character-based songs), Les Mis (some nice brooding lower songs from Eponine and Fantine) or Chess' I Know Him So Well if you can work it into a solo (shouldn't be too hard) or even Losing My Mind from Follies for a nice confused, intense number you can act your little heart out to. All depends on the musical and part you're auditioning for. Gve me a note on my column if you want to be more specific and I'll do my best to think of some good numbers to suit what you're doing.

it all depends on your vocal range
if you have seen the movie, then you should know that emmy rossum has a very wide vocal range and that she is definently a soprano one
some of the notes are high, but if you are within that range, it shouldn't be hard to hit with some practice
maybe you should ask your chorus teacher to help you through
know the words and the notes then go in and ask for help
i hope that all goes well
and i also agree that it is a beautiful song

If it's for a musical, I wouldn't suggest something from phantom. Not only does it not quite fit but almost no 13 year olds can successfully pull off phantom because their voices aren't mature enough yet, no matter how advanced- but that's just my opinion. I'd say try something from south pacific, meet me in st. louis, guys and dolls, or maybe even fiddler on the roof. these are really general suggestions since I don't know what musical you are auditioning for, but you can always shoot me a message with more specifics. also, a good website is livejournal.com/audition_help. good luck!

I have the sheet music and it's really easy. But you need to be able to sing really high notes and have a good range. I've only had two years of choir and I was able to sing that song in my first year. Good luck!

*hope I helped*

Well, I'm not going to lie....but that is truly a really demanding song. But if you really have a good voice and are in advanced choir..shouldn't be a problem.

awww i love that song! its not toooo vocally demanding but it is challenging. if your a soprano and can pull off the opera stuff, you should be fine, however, i dont really recommend something like that for a musical. theres an opera/classical voice and a broadway voice. go for something from wicked of something like that. thats just my opinion...i don't take audtions seriously tho. final decision: go for it... its a great piece! goodluck! <3
