This means no oxygen is getting to the cells in your arm so they have to go through something called anaerobic respiration to stay alive. Other than making the energy your cells need to survive, anearobic respiration gives off lactic acid which is a poison to your body. When people get their legs trapped under heavy objects as a result of an earthquake or something for a very long time their legs have to be amputated on the spot so that the poison can't spread to the rest of their body and kill them. Sleeping on your arm, though the same thing happens, isn't lethal because it's only for a few hours not days. This will have the same effect on most people so it's nothing to worry about. You may, however, have bad circulation. This is something you want to talk to your doctor about. It's not a life or death situation and I'm not sure there's anything that can be done about it, it's just something you should mention the next time you visit. If your circulation is bad enough your doctor may be able to help you with it. I'm not sure what kind of treatments are involved, I'm guessing maybe exercise, change in diet, or possibly medication. I hope my explanation made sense to you even though it was kind of unnecessary. I think it's important to understand what's going on in your body. So again, no worries, just try not to fall asleep on your arm because of how annoying it is. Good luck! [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]
