Best gas mileage for the best price?

Question Posted Wednesday October 26 2005, 9:53 pm

I'm a fifteen year old female, and I will be turning sixteen pretty soon. To my extreme amazement, my parents have decided to buy me a car to share with my younger brother when he comes of driving age.

I'm very appreciative of this, because I was expecting to drive my Dad's old 1982 Chevy for the next few years. The problem is, I'm finding it hard to find a small car with good gas mileage at a reasonable price.

I'm particularly fond of the Mazda cars. If you have any suggestions for cars meeting these three requirements:

- Costs less than $15,000
- City gas mileage of 26 MPG or greater
- Well-made car

Feel free to suggest anything to me. Like I said, I prefer the Mazda, but anything fitting those three things would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

mid ninties acura legend 88-91
mercedes benz 190e 89-93
toyota cressida 90-92
nissan 240SX 90-98
lincoln mark VIII 93-98
ford taurus SHO 96-99
toyota celica all trac 90-94
nissan 300ZX 83-86
mazda miata MX-5 89-94
mazda RX-7 85-90
BMW 2002 turbo 71-75
BMW 3 series 83-89
subaru legacy 90-93
audi quattro 85-90
audi 100 90-94
audi A4 quattro 94-98

all of these cars are within your pricerange, offer a good amount of performance, speed, and power as well as a good amount of gas mileage. you will note that i have not included a single front wheel drive vehicle (except ford taurus SHO) and all of these cars get between 20-34 miles a gallon in city driving (the lincoln mark VIII being the most surprising with a V8 engine that gets 28 to the gallon) all of these vehicls are very reliable cars, though many are japanese cars the european and american makes are just as reliable if not moreso. the RX7 is the biggest risk with it's rotary engine but is a very reliable car nonetheless. i do not suggest most hondas as they are front wheel drive, underpowered, and unreliable. mitsubishi is also right out. do not buy a front wheel drive vehicle. rear wheel drive and all wheel drive are the makes you should look ar right out as they are the safest cars one could buy simply because they provide better turning and better grip on the road.

I have no idea... but I suggest maybe you open up to other brands of cars in case you can't find something that meets your requirements. There are some good ones out there that aren't mazdas...good luck!

P.S. I applaud your awesome grammar and you seem rather intelligent. This is almost a first considering the other 15 year-olds I've seen on here. Thank you for partially restoring my hope in humanity.

It may be worth considering the domestic version of the car you like (like a Dodge Neon or Stratus, Chevy Malibu, etc). The repair costs on domestic cars is typically lower as are insurance costs. If not, I have many friends who have driven Toyota Corollas for years and years. Best wishes.

Mitzubishi is a great car and usually reasonably priced. They drive great and have great gas mileage. Also, look at Saturns. They are wonderful on gas and insurance costs. Mazda and Mitzubishis are foreign cars so the insurance costs will be more on these cars. Last but not least, if you could locate a used Honda w/o many miles on it, they are great on gas and hold their value very well. The problem with Hondas is their owners usually hold on to them until you are in the 100s of thousands of miles. Also, their insurance is higher because they are one of those cars most often stolen.

Good Luck!
