i want to make my house scary this year for halloween. i dont want it to look cheesy cause thats gay. but i am on a budget. so if anyone has ideas on what i could make that would be scary and how to make it that would be great. its for my yard, any projections that i could do, and props that look scary or anything. just start giving me ideas if you can. i will rate 5 if its really creative and easy to make. thanks.
Make your house look really old by adding dead leaves and maybe replacing the porch light with a dull orange one that way it looks like a lantern. Then turn off all your house lights and leave candy out on the porch. Dress in all black and hide in the bushes and when they come up, jump out and scare them. I do this every year and it's great. Also, get someone to dress up as like a scarecrow or frankenstein and make them look really fake. Then put the bowl of candy in their lap. Just tell the kids to get it from there, and when they take one, the guy can yell "boo!" its really scary, especially to little kids and if you make the person look really fake by hiding their hands and stuff. I'm trying to do the same and it's really difficult!! However, I have found a couple of things that seem to work really well:
Dead leaves. Collect them and scatter them about...just in your window if you're not allowed them in the house. They're extra cool outside especially if it's windy because they blow at people and no-one can actually see what's hitting them!
Talking doormats. I don't know if you have these stores where you are, but you should be able to find these mats - Wilkinsons and Woolworths sell them in England. Basically, someone steps on the doormat and the mat goes 'wooo!'. Yes, the noise is cheesey but it's always a good laugh and usually at leats shocks people!
Cauldrons. Especially if you can get some dry ice and put it in the cauldron so it looks like steam is coming out. If you can't get dry ice, anything hot and steaming will do. Hot water will work best as it's easy to replace. You might have to put a candle behind it or something though to make the steam show up.
Black lightbulbs - very cool light effect and only cost £1 each!! And don't put any other lights on.
Streamers always look good, esp. orange and black ones.
If you can get some chains, that would be cool too. Do you know what glow-bracelets are? I bought a bunch of those last year and joined them together in a chain and then hung it on the mirror so it was reflected. They looked really cool. Some glow sticks in a pot or something would look cool too if you can't get the bracelets.
Try some dead sticks in vases here and there so it looks like everything has died.
You can buy special black rippable cloth for pretty cheap now too. You just rip holes in it so it looks all tattered and old and then use it as a backdrop in the window or as a door curtain.
I bought a revolving light from Woolworths...it's like a dome over a lightbulb that casts shadows on the walls or ceiling and revolves so that they move. You might not be able to get your hands on one, but creepy cut outs of dead trees or the moon put over a torch would work OK.
Check out Birthdays and Clintons and Partners shops too if you have those. Don't pass a shop by because it looks cheesey - sometimes you can find a few good things even in cheesey shops. It's just a question of working out what goes where - plan it! - and accepting that, on a budget, you can't have the scariest house the in world but it can still be cool!!
Don't forget the pumpkin!! You can get all sorts of designs to print off the internet and carve into them now. You can do a scary face...spider web...I've seen a witch carved into one.
If you can get your hands on any creepy-looking portrait (print off the internet?) that'll be cool too - you always feel like they're watching you!!
You know how people who kill deer and stuff cut off their heads and hang them on plaques on the wall? Well this year I found a full-head (i.e. it has a back and a front not just a front and elastic) werewolf mask that looks pretty scary and realistic, and I'm making one of those plaques (they look kinda like sheilds or coats of arms) out of card and hanging them up on my wall!
Have fun, and remember not to try too hard or it'll look over-done! [ BeautifulMadness's advice column | Ask BeautifulMadness A Question ]
