Question Posted Saturday October 15 2005, 12:00 pm

i was just wondering...what does a spider bite look like? The other day I had this reddish looking thing on my chest...and now two red dots in a row on my pinky. Are these spider bites!??!

The one on your pinky is for sure a spider bite because spider bites create marks in a line pattern. If you could describe the reddish thing on your chest in further detail I could help with that too. Just drop one in my inbox!

They could be. But more than likely they're just flea bites, mosquitoe bites, or some other small insect. Spider bites usually turn purple.

I went on vacation last week, and I had to sleep in the floor at one hotel, and I got bitten by a spider. At first I didn't know it was a spider bite - I thought it was like a clogged pore. It had like a "head" on it and was REALLY painful. It didn't itch at all. The next night when I was changing out of my jeans, I accidentally scrubbed all the skin off of the "head," thus popping it. By this time, it was swolen and purple! I know it was a spider bite because of this. It didn't ever itch at all. But it hurt and was swolen, and purple. Now I just have a little scab as a reminder of where it was. No big deal.

If the bites start to itch, you'll know it wasn't a spider bite. Spider bites almost never itch. You'll be fine. :)
