Question Posted Thursday September 15 2005, 10:13 pm
Im trying out for drama club and we have to do an improv for tryouts. So I have to give a lecture about something(like a mom telling her kid to get better grades, a police telling a driver they're going to fast, etc) But the problem is, the lecture wont be directly to someone else, just thin air! And i dont know what topic it will be on. So are there anyways i can prepare for this? thanks i rate.

My topic was lecturing a softball team
You yell and give a good lecture. I did it in front of the whole 4th grade (the year b4 us) and it was so much fun.
Say things like Jenn stop doing your nails!
KAte stop staring at the boys!!!
The topic will probably be something like that.. so think of what the person in real life would do it.
It's hard, picking it out of thin air like that.. but just trust your instincts and if you are confident, then you will do real well (I'm in drama too!)
Good luck! Auditions are always the hardest part of theprocess.

As for the thin air thing, envision a person there, imagine that you ARE that angry mom, or that you are that policeman, and picture as much of the enviroment your character is in as you can, and you have to be able to think fast, just go for the first thing that pops into your mind, MAKE it work, and even if you make an ass of yourself, you can't be blamed for trying.
Also, remember that it's all about fun, so don't be too nervous. And what nervousness you have, project into your performance, because emotions are like energy, and you can convert one to another. [ cynicalladvice's advice column | Ask cynicalladvice A Question ]

xOxMaNdEex3 answered Saturday September 17 2005, 5:51 pm: Well it'll be a little hard since your not sure what its gonna be on... but you can prepare on it by just having a friend or somebody telling you to do random skits and try to do them and know that you can do them well... knowing that you can do the skit without knowing before hand what its gonna be on! So thats pretty much the only way I can think of practicing... or else just good luck and I hope you do well! I hope I helped a little bit! x_mystery answered Friday September 16 2005, 3:47 pm: Have a friend come over, and run over a couple different scenes of you giving your friend a lecture. Then, when it comes tryout time, imagine your friend is sitting right there, and say what you did before. [ x_mystery's advice column | Ask x_mystery A Question ]
twizzler2 answered Friday September 16 2005, 3:06 pm: i took theatre last year and we had to do things like that. since you are gonna be talking to the "air" ...just pick a little area in the classroom to focus on but DONT stare at it...just pretend lyk that is the person you are talking to. If you get into character it is easier and practice random lectures in front of people at your house or ur friends and see what they have to say...this shud help!! good luck!!

THOSEGirls answered Friday September 16 2005, 1:25 pm: Practice talking about anything standing in front of your mirror and pretending that there is another person. Pick a spot about eye level and focus on it to help you look like you're talking to someone. Good Luck! [ THOSEGirls's advice column | Ask THOSEGirls A Question ]
