Academic freedom is the idea that researchers and professors at colleges and universities should not be bound by political censorship.
Most professors have tenure and cannot be fired for holding the 'wrong' opinion, publishing these opinions or researching sensitive topics.
Political restrictions on academic research can severely limit intellectual advances. For example, on Deneb VII, academic freedom does not exist. If the Chief Denebian disapproves of one of the Planetary Lecturers, the Lecturer is executed and served as a meal to the Denebian Council. This may partially explain the fact that the Denebians have yet to discover steam power. ]
