Question Posted Sunday August 28 2005, 10:38 pm

my dad says that i can not get a straightner because it will ruin my hair and i will have disgusting hair when i get older and its just really bad for my hair. hes like "you can get the same effect by blow drying it" but i know that you cant because he has this picture in his mind of when i blow dried my hair a certain way once and it was SOOOOO puffy and ugly so i just put it up. and thats what hes thinking of! im like "no dad thats not it! my hair looks soo much different and better when its straightend! it is my hair and ill pay for it with my own money" he just gave me a look like he mite consider it. but i dont know, how can i he sure?

Just tell him tons of girls use it, and only hair stylists can really straighten it with blow dryers because they're experienced and know exactly what to do with the brush and all that. Tell him you won't use it everday, and that you'll buy some really good products like shampoos and conditioners that revive hair to keep it in shape. Like use "for damaged hair" products even if it isn't damaged to prevent it from happening. I've been using one for years, and some times it makes hair break a little on the top, but it's hardly noticable, especially for a guy, of all people. For the effect I get, it's totally worth it. There's no way to be sure, just tell him it's important to you, and you feel unfeminine without it. Good Luck!

Use protecting shampoo, conditioner, and hair lotion. ThermaSilk has amazing hair products that protect your hair and keep it gorgeous! Use a ceramic iron and blow-dry first.

Good Luck!

Tell him that you can buy a straightener with a steamer because it won't damage your hair nearly as bad. Also explain to him that you can buy some deep conditioners. Plus if the deep conditioners you buy dont work, go to a cheap salon, like the ones that pay 13 bucks for a cut and they can give you a deep conditioning treatment for like 7 bucks! Don't sound rude or anything when you talk to him.

There are certain products that you can put in your hair, there's one by Matix you can get at trade secret, and it adds moisture into your hair so when you straighten your hair, it doesn't become as damaged.

Pomade will help eliminate the frizzies and fly aways that are caused by straightening.

Okay, I straighten my hair A LOT, BUT your dad IS right. Straighteners not only straighten, but they suck all the moisture & oils out of your hair, and a couple years from now, your hair will be dried out. BUT, straightening your hair occasionally won't really do a great deal of damage. Explain that to your dad, but don't be stubborn and say "its my hair! its my money!" cause that typically leads to a no. Say that you're mature enough to pay for it and you understand the potential damage that could go on towards your hair & that you ALSO won't do it EXTREMELY frequently.
