If you really want to get rid of those love handles, you must use a three way approach.
The most important part is what you eat. Take a look at your diet and see how many grams of fat you eat on a daily basis. If fat calories (9 per gram) make up more than 25% of your daily intake, start to slowly replace those calories with something with less fat. Also eat several small meals during the day to increase your metabolism.
Are you doing 30 minutes of aerobic activity at least 3 times a week, preferably more? This will help burn calories.
Finally, doing ab exercises is fine for stengthening your mid section. For your obliques (love handles) you can do side bends or crunches with a twist or other exercises depending on what equipment you have. The thing is, you should be doing resistance training for your ENTIRE body, especially the large muscle groups of the thighs, hips, upper and lower back, and chest. Working these large muscle groups will actually help you burn off fat because as these muscles start to grow, it will require more calories during the day for your body to maintain them. Doing 12-15 reps will ensure results without building up too much.
Squats, leg presses, side leg raises, lat pull downs or rows, chest presses, and back
extensions are all good exercises to start this off.
