on birth control because of my period.

Question Posted Sunday July 31 2005, 1:19 pm

I just got on birth control because of my period. I was wondering if any of you have been put on it and it DIDNT' help lighten your period and make it shorter? For those who have, was it a dramatic difference? Anything else I should know?

I've been on Yaz for about a year and I LOVE it! My periods are lighter and only last about 3 or 4 days. AND another plus, my boobs got a little bigger! It's totally and completely worth it!

Every birth control is different and they all come with side effects...

I was on Depo provera shot and I didn't experience a period at all, It took some time for it to completely fade away but in time it did. I was told this was normal, However I did get some light spotting here and there.

I also went on the Mirena IUD, About a month after inserting I noticed I again did not experience any period. It last 5 years and it was wonderful...That IS until I started experiencing some abdominal pain and had to have it taken out. A day after I had it taken out my period was back to normal.

Everyone is different, However on some birth control some people don't get periods which again I was told is completely normal. If you are on the birth control pill depending on if you were put on it recently it may take some time for your period to lighten up..After all it took me about a month for my body to adjust to the birth control I was taking. If it doesn't lighten up at all then you might want to call your OBGYN

I have. I've been on 2 different types of birth control; I was on Ortho Cyclen for about a year, and then I switched too YAZ and have been on it ever since. (About 4 years).

Neither birth control has made my period shorter. It has made it more endurable, because it has lightened up a bit, but it's actually longer now than it was before.

Take it everyday, even if you aren't using it for birth control. Taking it everyday is what makes the hormones regulate your cycle. Depending on what kind you decide to take, you may feel sick at your stomach or just strange the first few months. Don't stop taking it though, eventually your body will get used to it.

Well,I wouldn't use it just to lighten your period...especially since the pill can cause you to gain weight quickly and other nasty sideffects.

Hope I've helped in some way

I was on the pill for 9 years and just recently went off of it. I found through the years that for the most part my period was noticeably lighter and a little shorter. I usually only bled 2-3 days with a very light flow and no cramping while on the pill.

There were a few pills that I've been on that did the reverse, giving me a heavier flow and more cramping, but I just switched to a different pill and it straightened it out. You just have to experiment to find the right pill for you. Common side effects are heavier flow, more cramping, headaches, and moodiness. If you have side effects from a pill, just talk to your gyno and have them switch you to another brand. Give the new pill about 3 months before changing so you can be sure the side effects won't clear up on their own.
