I have a very bad case of Arachnephobia. I've always been afraid of spiders, but it wasn't always like a phobia. (Phobia here is defined as an irrational fear that interferes with normal living). It started about a year or two ago, when after a shower, I was toweling off, and there was a large spider on my towel. I hated spiders, so I flung the towel across the room, and spend the next half hour curled up, crying. It scared me half to death. Then later, my cousins and I went to a park, and there was a profusion of spiders. My little cousin Andy loves spiders, so he pointed out every single one. They were each about 4-6 inches long. After about five minutes, I couldn't take it anymore. I hid in the car and cried. Things reached their worse when last month, I woke to find a strange bite on my arm. I figured it was just a bug bite, and ignored it. By noon that day, the area near the bite had swollen into a huge bump, about three inches long and one across, and at least a half inch high. I was feeling naseous, and terrified. I was so afraid that I refused to sleep in my bed that night.
Things have just gone down hill from there. Some nights, I won't sleep because I am afraid of the spiders. I check my blankets almost every night, and sometimes sleep in another room. I shake my towel out before using it. I check the shower and garage for spiders before entering. I know this is irrational and abnormal, but somehow I can't help it. What should I do?

Alpha345 answered Saturday July 16 2005, 1:23 am: I got the same deal with spiders, I hate them and I freak out whenever I see one. I guess some of that can derive from my mom getting a bite by a brown recluse spider on her ankle when I was very young and her coming pretty close to death because of it (she still has the distortions and marks there too). Another reason is that I do not like the way the move or just how the look. Everything about spiders I hate. Your not alone with Arachnephobia, trust me. I would say it has to be one of the most common phobia's out there. The best advice I can give you is to just kill them when you see them (or have someone else do it for you). And to kinda check with your eyes if there is a spider somewhere near you. Also you can try seeking professional help for this. I really hope this gets better for you, I know what your feeling and hope this advice helps.
chakra answered Friday July 15 2005, 4:50 pm: Just remember your not the only one with an irrational fear, Yours actually is very rational and common. i do what you do, check for spiders when i enter a room, and look round the room alot too and check bedding and stuff.
Because your fear is so extreme you need some kind of therapy, which made sound scary but some can do wonders.
Theres one called "thought field therapy" which is really effective and millions of people are being cured of their phobias from it, it can take less that an hour to cure although in extreme cases may take quite a bit longer, depending on how many times you had it and how regular. also "emotional freedom techneque" is a good one, the good thing about that is you can learn to do it on your self so when you feel panic if u see a spider you can do this "tapping" therapy on your self and feel better.
have a look on the internet for thought field therapy" and ""emotional freedom techneque" therapists in your area.

You know, the bunny who used to bop mice onthe head? Well, yea. I used to have nightmares about him and i couldnt get that stupid song out of my head. My family used to sing it and i would burst out crying. I used to ly awake hearing that song. I forgot what he looked like, but it still scared me until i went on a cruise and this kids camp on it they sang little rabbit foo foo instead of bunny, and i thought it was funny, so i wasnt scared of him anymore. Now, i suggest that you talk to your parents. I'm sure there are places you can go to overcome your fear of spiders. I'm not fond of spiders either, i just smoosh them when i see them lol. They are much smaller then you and can not hurt you, unless it is a poisunous one which i'm sure you will not find anytime soon. Good Luck! confusedbabii answered Friday July 15 2005, 1:30 pm: i think it's totally normal. i used to be the same exact way... i always seemed to think that there was spiders crawling on me and i'd freak out every second. i used to sleep only when i was so tired that i'd pass out. now about what you can do to get over it...my mom wanted to take me to a psychiatrist and it pretty much worked. but anyways...they tell you all this jazz about how the spider is so much smaller and how it's more scared of you than you are of it. you should talk to a parent and ask them to look into it. hope i helped!
LoViny0ux914 answered Friday July 15 2005, 1:28 pm: my mom has a severe phobia of bees, to the point where she would cry when she had to walk from the house to the car. we all (my family) make her go the a doctor that deals with those phobias and they put her on a special medicine for it, she has to take it once a day. ever sinse she started on the meds, shes been absolutely fine. she gets a bit jumpy around bee's now but its NOTHING like how it ued to be. now her reaction is just as any normal persons, not even that bad. so i guess what im saying is you should go to a doctor and explain to her your phobia and ask her to give you some medication for it bc it really does work! hope this helps xoxo [ LoViny0ux914's advice column | Ask LoViny0ux914 A Question ]

Psychological Treatments
Exposure to Feared Situations - This technique, also called in vivo exposure , is the treatment of choice for specific phobias. Essentially, it involves confronting a feared situation repeatedly, until the situation no longer triggers fear. For example, someone with a fear of spiders might begin treatment by looking at pictures of spiders, or by standing 30 feet away from a spider in a sealed jar and gradually moving closer and closer to the spider (eventually even touching it). Someone with a fear of storms might be taught to stand near the window or on the front porch during a storm, instead of hiding in the basement. Someone with a fear of elevators would be taught to ride elevators repeatedly until the fear decreases. Exposure works best when it occurs frequently (e.g., several times per week), and lasts long enough for the fear to decrease (up to two hours). Exposure-based treatments for some specific phobias (e.g., animals, blood) have been shown to work in as little as one session
