I'm not sure if this entirely answers your question, but not all evolutionary quirks happen because they are needed. Sometime they are the result of 'benign mutation.' For example, say you have a bunch of pigeons, and one is born that, througha genetic mutation, is a different colour. The difference in colour doesn't affect its chances of survival so it survives to breed others like it. They didn't 'need' to be a different colour to other pigeons, it just worked out that way. i dunno whether eye colour is related to this, but not all evolutionary occurances have to have an 'advantage.' ]
This is what you would call an "educated guess":
Most people back way way back had brown eyes, and that is the dominant gene in eye color. BUT some people had blue eyes, so it is not evolved. I think you see more of different colors now because we don't need the dark pigment to protect our eyes as much any more. Just a guess... ]
its like a pigment. they way it just is, just like different skin colors, different hair colors, different heights. all of it is ust decided individually by a persons genes or yes their needs. but eye color was not EVOLVED it has always been with people throughout history.
