If you are running OS 7/8/9.anything select your hard drive, and hold Command(Apple), while pressing the "i" key once. A window will pop up with information about your hard disk, including free space. If you are running OS X, There are a number of ways you may be able to find out, but I think they differ slightly from 10.1 through to 10.4. If you can see your hard disk on the desktop, use the same method as for OS 9. If you cannot, try clicking on the desktop once, holding Command(Apple), and pressing the comma/full-stop key. This should bring up a window where you have the option to show your hard drive on your desktop. If this doesn't work on one of the 10.somethings, hold Command(Apple), and press the "n" key. This will bring up a new window, through which you can find your hard drive, and use Command i.
If you need any more Mac advice I'm your person ^.- Using a Mac since I was 7

Then you click on 'Details' which is on the left hand side and it says how much free space you have. I don't know if it's the same with Mac, but I should think it's pretty much the same.
