Buying a Computer

Question Posted Monday July 4 2005, 10:36 pm

I would like some advice on what to look for in a decent, used Laptop computer. I'm looking to use this for internet use, Word programs etc, and pretty light on the game play with a CD Rom and floppy. What is the price range I'm looking at for something very decent but also not new, because I only have about $350 max to work with.

Is it lame of me to think to find a good laptop on ebay?
If I try to find one on ebay, what specs should I look for? I'm not up on what RAM, ROM, is considered 'good', or anything about internet cards.

I was also told that laptops are basically useless, and that if I want a personal computer I should just get a desktop one. How true is this?
Is my search hopeless?

Thanks a lot to anyone who will help.

Its not really LAME to look on ebay for laptops, you've just got to be really careful about who you're buying from and stuff, otherwise if you're not careful you could get ripped off. I'd reccomend buying a dell refurbished laptop, I am not sure exactly how much they start at price-wise, but heres the link. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) . My laptop I have is an Inspiron 2650, its held up pretty well. Ive had it for like 2 years. It has windows XP, DVD player, 256 MB and stuff like that. When looking for a laptop, try to get one with XP, and def. not anythings below 98. Also, the operating system of WINDOWS ME has NOT been a good system from what ive heard and it sucks. if you decide to not get a laptop, you can probably get an O.K desktop thats brand new, but remember you get wut u pay for. If you need more info just ask or im me. Sorry if that was confusing

You'd be better of getting a desktop. Laptops generally aren't as powerful as desktop PC's, and typically are a pain in the ass to use (In my opinion, anyway...stupid laptop keyboards...).

If you're not going to be doing alot of traveling for business or whatever, I definitely recommend getting a desktop PC. They've got more gaming power, more space, and most are quite user friendly.

As MFS said, Dell sells good quality computers pretty cheap, so I'd defintely check them out. Their laptops are relatively cheap too.

If you're just stuck on getting a laptop, try eBay. Make sure it's from a reliable seller (check their feedback) and research exactly what they're selling to prevent buying a piece of shit.

I hope this advice helps you in your search for a computer.

With only a $350 budget, you might be better off saving up a bit more and getting a new Dell laptop. Dell is practially giving systems away, with laptops starting at $549. Mind you, I'm not a huge Dell fan or anything, but for what you've described, wouldn't you be happier with a new system with a warranty than a used system that could be a total lemon?

Now, as far as laptop vs. desktop - ask yourself this: Why do you need the system?

If you don't need this system to be portable to take on trips, etc... why the hell are you looking for a laptop? Laptops are inherently more expensive, therefore you can always get more bang for the buck from a desktop system.

But with a desktop, you lose your ease of portability/mobility, etc. But if you don't really need a laptop, you should probably not bother looking for one, especially with your budget constraints.
