The issue with the nail-polish treatment someone mentioned is this: by the time you've found the ithcy spot, the chigger is long-gone.

The chigger is a nymph of some other insect that I am forgetting at the moment and don't feel like looking up... it is a nasty little critter... small and white and very fast. It sticks its head into your hair follicle and injects a fun protein which dissolved the follicle so the chigger can drink it up... yummy... the aftermath of the injection it makes is horrible, horrible itching that can last for days.

The nailpolish technique can work, but not because it is killing the chigger. The theory is that it keeps air out of the inflammed area which keep the irritation down.

Benadryl can help, as can benadryl cream. Cold compress will also keep the itching down. The second you notice a chigger bite, take a shower - the chigger will not survive a bathing.

It is possible to treat lawns for chigger infestations, but usually takes at least 2 treatments administered about 2-3 weeks apart (kills the current chiggers, then a 2nd treatment to kill the next brood).
