Can a man be a feminist?

Question Posted Thursday June 16 2005, 6:53 pm

I have had a debate with a friend of mine about whether it's proper to refer to myself as a feminist. I believe I am a feminist, but I can also see the argument that because I am not a girl I can not be a true feminist, even if I hold all the beliefs of a feminist.

Men can definitely be feminists. I'm friends with lots of them. There've even been cool guys throughout history, like John Stuart Mill, who made fantastic contributions to the feminist movement. If you think men and women deserve to be treated equality and acknowledge the fact that we're not quite there yet, you're a feminist, and it doesn't matter what gender you are.
