Swimmers Only

Question Posted Thursday June 16 2005, 3:50 pm

Tonight I have a swim meet and I have to swim 100 yards Butterfly. I'm terrible at butterfly and I can only do about 50 yrds before collapsing. It's an important meet so I want to do well, but atleast finish. Any tips, hints, or advice on how to do well tonight? I'll rate verry high!

If you go into the meet telling yourself you arent going to finish or do well then you wont. Winning your race or even finishing it for that matter, is by far more mental than physical. As for actually swimming, on your dive make sure you launch yourself as far as you possibly can and streamline and butterfly kick under water for as long as possible( but remember you can only stay underwater for a little more than half a pool length) do this on your turns as well. Work on your breath control and keep your head down at all times even when breathing, also make sure you keep a fluid steady rythum and USE YOUR HIPS/LEGS, that is where your power comes from. Pace yourself, 1st lap go out at a steady pace, 2nd start building up, 3rd go out strong, 4th lap go all out like its all you have to live, hold nothing back and no matter how tired or how much you hurt you CAN do it. Just keep telling yourself that you can do it and that you arent tired and you dont feel any pain. Hope your race goes well and you have fun. Good luck.

ok i used to be a year round swimmer so hopefully i can give you some good tips.
-When you dive in, streamline and kick butterfly for as long as you can. Its faster than actually swimming and conserves energy in your arms. Do this every time you push off the wall.
-For the first lap, don't go slow, but go as fast as you can comfortably and without tiring yourself out, if that makes sense.
-If you get reallly tired, try to lengthen your stroke staying under a little longer than you normally would and really try and kick with your legs so its easier to bring your arms out of the water.

And remember in butterfly when you're breathing don't lift your head up and look down the pool, it causes the bottom half of your body to drop basically making you STOP in the water. Instead try and keep your face like facing the water and breathing like that!

hope i helped!

well, just tell yourself that you can do it! :) and just say to yourself, i only have to do this one time! then i am done. its just like at pratice doing the 50yd. twice! calm yourself down, and tell youself that you can do it! you have to believe in yourself, and have confidence in yourself before anyone else can help you! :)
