making clothes

Question Posted Wednesday May 11 2005, 8:41 pm

so my family is not very well off. i`ve had the same shirts for way too long, and i get SO SICK of wearing them over & over, when it seems like all the other girls have a different outfit every day. i tried talking to my mom about it, but most of our money`s been going to pay hospital bills (my brother just had surgery--nothing too serious) so i dont really have time or money to buy any clothes, seeing as i dont et an allowence. i was wondering if anyone knew how to spruce up outfits with every-day things? or even just making my own clothes...like turning an old pair of jeans into skirts? anybody know how...

here are some ideas:
-old pair of jeans- cut the seams allong the inside of the legs. sew the 2 sides together as a skirt is. if the skirt is too long, cut them and sew.

-old tees and tanks- wear tanks on top of tees. it creates a whole new style for summer and you won't need new clothes.

-old tees- sew on buttons, ribbons, bows, or even bottle caps to turn an old tee into a stylish one.

-old dresses- cut off the bottom that is like a skirt and wear with a belt or sew in a ribbon to keep it up.

-old sweatshirts- cut off the top and sleeves for a stylish colder summer day look

find anything lying around and turn it into something great!

Try and get a job at a local shopping centre or local paper round to try and get a bit more money you can spend on new clothes. if you have a long skirt but it to make it shorter, If you have a long sleeved top cut the sleves off and make it short straps, or get a long sleeved top e.g. yellow and get another long sleeved top e.g. blue cut the sleeves out of both of them and sew them on each other so the yellow top has blue sleeves and the blue top has yellow sleeves. a bit confusing sorry.hope i've helped you
luv shelly

well sometimes i like 2 do that to my outfits. the best way is to go to like..a craft store. buy fabric and make patches and stuff on jeans..also pieces of torn fabric can make really cute hair pieces or belts. you can also cut jeans into capris or cut jeans to make skirts then cut thru the side of the jeans facing your thighs and stitch it back as a skirt. that would be cute. for shirts..decorate them with patches and cute buttons or something. you can find special craft ideas in craft books or something. trust me youll be getting all the attention with adorable homemade stuff
hope i helped
xoxo

It's a good decision to make your own clothes. We all need to start doing things ourselevs instead of letting companies tell us what we should get. BUT ANYWAYS. First, make designs of outfits you'd desire to have, then find a fabric store in the area. If you don't have a sewing kit or machine, ask for it for your birthday or a holiday. This will give you and your family time to save up if you really want to do this. Then make the clothes. I don't use the sewing machine often, so I don't exactly know how to use one, but it is possible, and economical, to do this yourself.
