Question Posted Monday May 2 2005, 8:34 pm

I downloaded Limewire, but it says I have to let my firewalls stop blocking it. Is this safe?

Well if your firewall blocks it, you can't send/receive information and therefore, cannot utilize the whole P2P filesharing (which is the point of the program). So to use Limewire, you have to unblock that.

However, this doesn't mean it's safe. You can get all sorts of malware through the stuff you download if you're not careful, but if you have a good AV (as well as the usual protectors such as Spybot and Ad-aware) then you'll be fine. Just don't let the RIAA catch you. :-P

Well, 2 things.
1. Letting the firewall down to install ILLEGAL music is not really the best idea.
and
2. Letting a firewall down is a bad idea due to the fact you're now very vulnerable to virus's etc.

Your choice.

Yes and No. Any time you use the internet, even with a firewall, there is some risk involved. File sharing is always a little more risky than say, web browsing with a browser other than internet explorer. If you only unblock the port or ports that limewire requests, you are as safe as you can be while still using a file sharing program.

Limewire has had security holes in the past, but to my knowledge, they have all been fixed. Still, it's a good idea to check for updates regularly, and only install the program from the official limewire site.

Also, if your file sharing, you should have both an anti-virus program and a spyware detector installed. It's also a good idea to regularly check your windows add/remove programs box for things that you didn't install.

Good Luck, and happy file-sharing. :)

It should be safe, the same thing happened when I downloaded itunes. I just unblocked it and everything is fine, but to be safe you should probably scan Limewire for any viruses after you download it.
