That sort of thing's happened to me a couple of times. I fixed it with a clean re install of windows (but in one case even this didn't work, it needed a new hard drive). If you want your stuff recovered you can take it to a computer shop and see if they'll do it (but this could cost quite a bit).

Hello there,

When you restart, you press F8 to get to the boot options screen. If you have tried starting in "Safe Mode" and have the same problem, then it is time to have the computer looked at in person, by someone who knows what they are doing.

This could be hardware failure: Bad hard drive, RAM, power Supply, CPU. Even something as simple as a CPU cooler could cause your problem.

It is also possible that it is software related. Did you have currently updated virus protection at the time? If not, there is a nasty bug going around AIM that, when opened, will corrupt the windows system files and prevent your computer from restarting.

The worst that would be required in this case is a system restore, or clean re-install of windows.

DangerNerd.

P.S. Mind if I use this question in my blog?

oh my gosh that exact thing happend to me the other day when i was on aim. so i just let it run and do everything by itself and now its fine. i have norton antivirus and protection though so im not sure. if it starts running again just make sure it isnt doing anything funny. if it acts up take it to a computer shop.

if its like my computer, just go into safe mode, and then restart it. normally that works for me, but you might need to take it to a technician or somebody.

when its restarting, i think you just hit escape (actually it might be F2), and a blue screen will show up with several options, it should be there.
