Ohkay, I am doing a science report on THERMAL POLLUTION and I was just weondering, does anyone know what it affects? like certain animals or areas of land/water? xO ali
glamnglitz answered Monday April 11 2005, 5:05 pm: Hey. I did a google search for it, and this is a small summary of what I came up on it:
Thermal pollution can be very harmful to aquatic organisms because of their requirements for survival. For example, cold blooded fish need to live in temperatures no higher than 24 degrees celsius. The extra heat in the water means that the fish's metabolism now needs to work faster. Since its metabolism is now working faster, it also needs more oxygen to meet metabolic demands. The result is that the fish has more difficulty surviving because oxygen is less soluble in warm water than cold water.
Zooplankton are another type of organism afffected.
